The history of Woodbridge can be traced back to 1714 when its unique geography was first settled by Quakers led by William Penn's agent James Logan (whose father Thomas served under General George Washington). They were given land along Raritan Bay near Port Reading which they developed as an agricultural community with many farms growing produce for Philadelphia markets – such as corn, wheat, oats, and cabbage.

Woodbridge became its own municipality in 1928, but the area has been inhabited since 1683 when English settlers first arrived at what was to become known as Port Reading. In 1714 a large tract of land near Woodbridge Township called “The Farm” was purchased by William Penn's secretary James Logan for £1200, from New Jersey Governor Phillip Carteret who had originally granted it to Elizabeth Lord on October 22nd, 1674. The Quakers sold local goods like corn, wheat, peas, and livestock to Philadelphia merchants such as Robert Owen (whose son John built Old Barracks Road) or Anthony Morris (who established his estate "Mount Hope" around 1820). With the arrival of industrialization, more residents began moving to the area.

Population Growth

Woodbridge Township's population has grown tremendously in recent years, with a growth of more than 34% between 1990 and 2010 to reach 41,750 residents by 2012. As of 2014, there were 59 people per square mile, which is an increase from 46 people per square mile as recorded during the previous census in 2000. The median income for a household was $86,375 (in 2009) and 50% had incomes over $100k; at that time about 16% of households had children under 18 living with them while 66% have married couples without any kids or other family members residing here and 20% are non-family units like roommates or just groups of unrelated persons who live together. Woodbridge offers many amenities such as golf courses, country clubs, and lakes.

In 2006, it was reported that at least three people were struck by lightning on the golf course every year over a five-year period ending 2005. Most popular landmarks in Woodbridge, and their representation of the town's history or culture.

Woodbridge is home to many historic places, the most popular being Woodbridge Center Mall. The mall was built in 1969 on a site that had seen several previous incarnations, including an amusement park (the last one known as "Wonderland") and a racetrack for horses from 1905 to 1953 called Engh's Raceway.

The Raritan River played a vital role in the development of this area - despite it flooding frequently at times, it offered flood protection by diverting water away from homes and businesses located along its banks. In 1887-1888 there were three major floods that caused havoc with crops but also prompted residents to petition for drainage systems since they believed that if they did not have these in place then their properties would eventually become worthless.

Woodbridge Center Mall was the first enclosed shopping center in New Jersey and has been a popular destination for generations of shoppers ever since it opened on November 15, 1969 - at that time it had 124 stores including an IGA supermarket which is still there today. The mall's original anchor stores were Sears & Macy's (formerly Bamberger's) with Woolworths as its junior anchor store while other notable retailers included Gimbels, Kresge’s, A&S Dresses, Waldbaum’s Supermarket grocery store along with Fortunoff Jewelers and Stern Bros department stores. In 1977-1978 Woodbridge Center underwent major renovations to include more retail space by expanding into vacant land next door where a new wing was added to the existing mall along with a large two-level parking garage and in 1981 an additional floor was added to Macy's.

Woodbridge Center Mall is still thriving today, after undergoing renovations that included demolishing some of its outdated stores; it now has over 150 shops including JCPenney, Target, Kohl’s, and more alongside restaurants like Red Lobster & Texas Roadhouse while there are plenty of other dining options at adjacent shopping centers such as Woodbridge Pointe Plaza which houses Chipotle, Panera Bread and California Pizza Kitchen.

A second popular landmark is "Mount Hope" which Anthony Morris established around 1820 on what used to be called Soule farm - this estate includes his brick mansion which is now a museum.
