Millions of Americans will be enjoying the long holiday weekend and the unofficial kick off to summer. Whether you’re planning to hit the roads, enjoy water activities or just a relaxing weekend at home with friends and family, here are some simple tips to keep safe this Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day Driving Tips

According to AAA, the number of Americans hitting the road to travel more than 50 miles this Memorial Day weekend is increasing over last year and the busiest in two years. Whether you’re on the New Jersey Turnpike, New York Thruway or the surface roads around urban areas, keep safe with these driving tips.

Slow Down

Speeding, weaving in and out lanes and other reckless driving behaviors are a sure fire way to end up in an accident or pulled over by law enforcement. Speeding can prevent you from having enough space to slow down if needed in between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. New Jersey’s aggressive driving law known as Jessica’s Law imposes severe penalties for drivers convicted of aggressive driving.

Put Down Your Phone

The National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that cell phone use was a factor in more than 400 of the 3100+ distracted-related fatal crashes in 2019. Despite these abysmal statistics, many drivers continue to use their phone while driving to text, play music and even more complicated tasks. Using your phone and driving is highly risky to you, other drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

Don’t Drive Drowsy

Driver fatigue accounts for more than 15% of fatal crashes and is the leading cause of accidents involving large trucks. Driving drowsy is especially common with people who work overnight hours or need to drive long distances. If you feel sleepy when driving, pull over into a safe area, drink a cup of coffee and rest for 15-30 minutes. Or, better yet, make sure to only drive when you’re feeling refreshed and avoid any alcoholic beverages when you know you’ll be driving late at night.

Drive Sober and Avoid Certain Medications

Many substances can impair driving, including alcohol, some over-the-counter and prescription drugs, and illegal drugs. Drivers impaired from alcohol or drugs can cause serious accidents on the road. Keep in mind that a driver can be found negligent in a civil lawsuit even if the driver’s level of impairment was under the legal limit or if the drugs were legally prescribed but contained a warning about driving.

Memorial Day Water Safety Tips

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

It is essential to always remain aware of your surroundings when you are on or near the water. This includes being aware of what's happening above, below, and behind you.

In boating, operator inattention is a common cause of boat accident deaths and injuries. If you have children on board, it is also important to watch them at all times while they are on deck. Be sure to note whether or not there are other boats nearby. You should also be on the lookout for ships in the distance and their colors.

Don't Forget Safety Items

If you plan on being in the sun this weekend, make sure to use sunscreen and keep hydrated. The sun is particularly strong this time of year.

It is essential to remember a few items before your next boating adventure. The top item on your list should be your life jacket. Ensure that everyone has one and that they are all properly fitted and worn at all times. Additionally, have a floatation device for every person on board. Such devices include safety harnesses, tethers, and floatation devices specially designed for children.
