Geography of White Plains, New York

North Castle is the town that borders White Plains to the north; Harrison is the town that borders White Plains to the north and east; Scarsdale is the town that borders White Plains to the south; and Greenburgh is the town that borders White Plains to the west. The city is located around 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Long Island Sound and 7 miles (11 km) east of the Hudson River. White Plains has a surface area of 9.77 square miles and a population density of 5,820.3 people per square mile, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

White Plains experiences four distinct seasons in a humid continental environment. The average January temperature is 29.8 °F (1.2 °C), which is cold and wet. The mean July temperature is 74.0 °F (23.3 °C), which is hot and muggy. Although they might range from cool to scorching in the spring and fall, temperatures are typically mild and agreeable. All twelve months of the year have enough of precipitation. The city experiences about 229 days every year that are clear or partly cloudy, with July often being the sunniest month with an average of more than 70% of the available sunshine.

Since records have been kept in White Plains since 1948, the lowest recorded temperature was 10 °F (23 °C) on January 19, 1977, and the highest was 102 °F (39 °C) on July 6, 2010. In a typical year, there are 18 days with temperatures of at least 90 °F (32 °C) and seven days with temperatures that do not climb beyond the freezing point.

Large corporations that have moved to the city are the center of White Plains' economy. With more than 6,000 students enrolled in its schools as of 2006, the White Plains Public School System runs five elementary schools (grades K–5), two middle schools (Eastview for grades 6 and Highlands for grades 7-8), one high school (9–12), as well as auxiliary facilities like a pre-kindergarten program, a community school (grades 7–12), adult and continuing education, and a program for school-age patients at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, whose campus is located in the city.

Population

There were 20,921 households, of which 11.3% had a female householder without a husband present, and 39.3% were not families. Of these, 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. One person lived alone who was 65 years of age or older in 11.8% of all homes, which included 33.4% of all households. There were 2.47 people per household and 3.14 people per family on average.
