Visit wealth of the past for a day by visiting Liberty Hall. Originally constructed for William Livingston, Liberty Hall was the perfect place for him to relax when taking a break from his job as a lawyer in New York City. Eventually Livingston became the first governor of New Jersey. Not only is the house known now for being a fifty-room mansion, but it also sports a beautiful garden and garden maze that visitors are welcome to explore.

William Livingston is not the only famous politician to have been in the house. Some of the other "celebrities" that have graced the halls would include George and Martha Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and even Presidents as recent as George H.W. Bush. You and your family can easily spend a day exploring the different areas of the grounds. There are house tours, garden tours, firehouse tours, and visiting exhibitions to enjoy.

Another important historical site located in Elizabeth is Boxwood Hall. This charming red colonial style house was once known as home to Johnathan Dayton, the youngest person to sign the Constitution. Boxwood Hall also served as accommodations for important travelers such as George Washington and General Lafayette.

Open Monday to Friday, this home can be toured for a feel of colonial style life in New Jersey. Much of the house still has the original hardwood and paneling for the walls. Since this site can be toured for free, it is a great budget-friendly option.
