GEOGRAPHY OF NORWALK
The city of Norwalk is located in the southwestern area of Connecticut, in southern Fairfield County, on the northern shore of the Long Island Sound, an estuary of the Atlantic Ocean. The city lies within the New York metropolitan area, as well as the Bridgeport metropolitan area. The city has a total area of 36.3 square miles. Of that, 62.76% of the area, or 22.8 square miles, is land, and 37.24% of the area, or 13.5 square miles, is water. The average elevation of the area is very close to sea level, as 42 feet, although the highest elevation is .315 feet, at the Silvermine Golf Course, and the lowest elevation is at sea level, on the Long Island Sound.
The city is a relatively flat area, with quick access to the many beaches that the area has to offer, as it is located right next to the shore of the Atlantic ocean. There are also many parks, trails, and forested areas. These areas surrounding the city give residents and visitors many great places for hiking, fishing, and other outdoor recreation activities.

Due to its location between northern and southern area, the city of Norwalk lies in a transition area for climate zones. It is between a cold humid continental climate, and a mild to temperate subtropical climate. The average temperature for the year is 52 degrees Fahrenheit, with the lowest average temperature in January at 28 degrees Fahrenheit, and the highest average temperature in July at 74 degrees Fahrenheit. The record low is -15 degrees Fahrenheit, and the record high is 103 degrees Fahrenheit.
The city gets a good amount of precipitation, with an average of 48.5 inches per year. On average, September gets the most rain, with an average of 4.54 inches for the month. February gets the least amount of rain, with an average of 3.15 inches for the month. It rains an average of 128.6 days out of the year. In terms of snowfall, Norwalk gets an average of 28.6 inches of snow a year. January tends to get the most amount of snowfall, with an average of 9.3 inches of snow for the month. It snows about 15.1 days out of the year.

As of the 2010 census, the population of Norwalk was 85,603 people, with 35,415 households and 21,630 families. The population density of the city was 2,358.2 people per square mile. There were 35,415 housing units in the city, with an average of 975.6 units per square mile. In terms of race, 68.7% of the city was white, 14.2% was black, 4.8% Asian, 0.4% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 9.0% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races.
Out of the 35,415 households in Norwalk, 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, and 47.1% were married couples living together. 11.0% of the households had a female with no husband present, and 38.4% were non-families. 33.0% of the households were individuals, and the average household size was 2.55 people.
